Red Screen Software for Windows Desktop and Laptop

Can anybody recommend some red screen software for a desktop computer and laptop running Windows? I have a mobile app that does this but can’t find one for Windows that does it.

I mean some software or an app for Windows 10/11 that keeps the screen red so it is better on the eyes.

@timothy ,
When I used my laptop, I never even thought of Red screen, though it certainly sounds like a good idea. I just dimmed my laptop screen to make it the least visually offensive as I could get it, and still be workable.

If you are imaging, not star gazing, does it matter so much? We all want to keep our night eyes when doing anything astronomy at night, but you don’t need night eyes while the computer scans and images the sky do you? The red lights keep your eyes in good condition for viewing the night sky which is especially useful if you are using a viewfinder or binoculars or your naked eye to view celestial objects. I don’t see the importance of this if you are only imaging unless you are star gazing as well with another scope setup. I think it is difficult to find such software for PC because most people who use a PC for this sort of thing use the computer to look at the images anyway and don’t need it redded out.

Some desktop astronomy software already has a red mode setting such as stellariam which has a button to turn on red mode (it is the eye with a star in it on the bottom menu), so it could be part of the reason why there are no specific red screen software application because the software that needs it already has in build in. just don’t jump out of that software into something else unless you want to spoil your vision of the night.

I think the idea is good on the surface, but to put it into perspective, is it needed for imaging? maybe in some situations, is it needed for gazing when you will be using the computer to view the images anyway? nope! :slight_smile:. For most cases of computer usage for astronomy in my opinion it is not needed especially if the software you are using already has the option to have it red anyway.

Like @Fred_Lombardo said, just dim the screen. I believe that is the most sensible thing to do if the brightness is going to be a problem for you.
